Orange Tortrix
Argyrotaenia citrana
Crops Affected: Apple, pear, apricot, avocado, caneberries, blueberries, grapes, citrus, conifers
States Affected: CA, OR, WA
Life Cycle: This moth overwinters in the pupal stage beneath dead leaves or sheltered locations. Adult emergence begins in June or July. Eggs are deposited on leaves in rows resembling fish scales. Pupation during summer takes place in webbed leaves on the host plant and in ground debris. There are multiple generations per year.
Damage: Larvae of this species feed within leaf blades, creating mines between epidermal layers or beneath plant bark. Early instar larvae skeletonize leaves under a silk shelter, progressing to later instars that roll, fold, or web leaves together or onto fruits as part of their feeding behavior.
Season to Trap: June to October
How To Use: Hang trap with lure inside at shoulder height near at risk or affected crops. Replace lures every 30 days through the season, and replace traps when 70% saturated. Adult males are attracted to the pheromones in the lure and the color of the traps in this kit. Once they land on the sticky trap, they become ensnared, never to mate or lay eggs again.
Additional IPM Solutions: Avoid practices that destroy or disrupt native beneficial insects. Sprays may be used when adults and larvae are active.
