Useful Information
Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP)
Diaphorina citri
Crops Affected: Citrus and closely related plants (kumquat and calamondin)
States Affected: AL, AZ, CA, FL, GA, HI, LA, MS, PR, SC, TX
Life Cycle: Eggs are deposited on growing shoots and in between unfolding leaves, with females laying over 800 eggs in their lifetime. The complete life cycle ranges from 15 to 47 days, depending on the season. Adults are small, measuring only 4mm in length. Although there is no diapause, populations decrease during the winter (dry season). Typically, there are nine to 10 generations per year, but field observations have reported up to 16 generations. Psyllids are often mistaken for aphids, which are commonly found on young citrus leaves, but can be identified by the psyllids' unique upright wing position at rest.
Damage: Asian Citrus Psyllids weaken plants by extracting sap. They also produce honeydew, leading to sooty mold growth that blocks sunlight. However, their most severe impact is as vectors of the very serious bacterial infection Huanglongbing (HLB), or citrus greening disease. HLB symptoms include yellow shoots, leaf mottling, chlorosis, and rancid-tasting fruit. Fruit fails to color properly, hence the term "greening." Unfortunately, there is no cure for HLB, and infected trees progressively deteriorate and eventually die.
Season to Trap: Year round, but less active in winter.
How To Use: Hang trap with attached lure at shoulder height near at risk or affected crops. Replace lures every 30 days through the season. ACP are very attracted to the strong odor of the lures and the bright color of the traps in this kit. Once they land on the sticky trap, they become ensnared, never to mate or lay eggs again. As soon as you catch a few, take the trap to your local agricultural department or extension office for positive identification. HLB is a serious threat to the citrus industry and your help in preventing its spread is essential.
Additional IPM Solutions: Avoid practices that destroy or disrupt highly effective native beneficial insects. Control ants. Only plant certified disease free rootstock.
