Useful Information
Light Brown Apple Moth
Epiphyas postvittana
Crops Affected: Apple. May also infest pear, peach, apricot, nectarine, citrus, persimmon, cherry, almond, avocado, oak, walnut, poplar, pine, grape, strawberry, cane berries, corn, pepper, tomato, pumpkin, beans, cabbage, carrot, alfalfa, rose.
States Affected: CA, HI
Life Cycle: Continuous development occurs without dormancy, yielding four to five generations. Females lay 20–50 eggs per mass on leaves or fruit, with variable fecundity up to 1500 eggs in a lifetime. Larvae disperse and craft silk shelters beneath leaves near veins. Older larvae create webbed shelters by rolling leaves, buds, or fruit together.
Damage: In apples, surface feeding by the larvae leads to fruit damage. Larvae will occasionally enter the fruit to feed.
Season to Trap: Year round
How To Use: Hang trap with lure inside at shoulder height near at risk or affected crops. Replace lures every 30 days through the season, and replace traps when 70% saturated. Adult males are attracted to the pheromones in the lure and the color of the traps in this kit. Once they land on the sticky trap, they become ensnared, never to mate or lay eggs again.
Additional IPM Solutions: This is a quarantine species. Reporting and insecticides may be required by local agricultural departments. Avoid practices that destroy or disrupt native beneficial insects.
