Lesser Peachtree Borer
Synanthedon pictipes
Crops Affected: Peach, plum, cherry, nectarine, apricot
States Affected: TX, OK, KS, NE, AR, MO, IA, MN, WI, IL, IN, MI, OH, PA, NY, NJ, DE, CT, RI, MA, VT, NH, ME, WV, MD, VA, KY, TN, NC, SC, GA, FL, LA, MS, AL
Life Cycle: This species of clear-wing borer moths lay larvae beneath the bark of stone fruit trees, targeting trunks and scaffold limbs. Infestations often center on previously injured tree areas Resembling bees or wasps, these moths are active in the daytime from February to December, with two generations yearly. Peak populations occur in March-April, with adults flying until November. Lesser peachtree borers pupate beneath bark, projecting pupal cases outside before emergence; this behavior distinguishes them from greater peachtree borer.
Damage: Larval feeding causes tree weakening and reduced productivity. Complete girdling by the larvae may lead to tree death.
Season to Trap: March to November
How To Use: Hang trap with lure inside at shoulder height near at risk or affected crops. Replace lures every 30 days through the season, and replace traps when 70% saturated. Adult males are attracted to the pheromones in the lure and the color of the traps in this kit. Once they land on the sticky trap, they become ensnared, never to mate or lay eggs again.
Additional IPM Solutions: Infestations are associated with diseased, damaged or weakened trees; take steps to improve vitality and to avoid unnecessary damage to trees. Monitor trees for gummosis and sawdust produced by the larvae or for the pupal cases. Spray at scheduled times during the season or, preferably, spray at the times of peak adult flight as indicated by your traps. Avoid practices that destroy or disrupt native beneficial insects.
