How to Identify Insects
Not sure what your pest insect is? Finding out this answer is the first step in an effective treatment strategy.
- Talk to your agricultural extension agency or browse their website. Every state and most territories has it's own extension run by a university. Using these resources from your own state or region will be most accurate for the pests and solutions for where you live.
- Talk to your local agriculture department. Most counties have a Department of Agriculture which can help direct you to the best local resource for pest identification. You can also contact your local USDA office for similar assistance.
- Talk to your local Master Gardeners. Most states have a Master Gardener program. These are affiliated with the extension agency but run by volunteers who provide garden advice to their communities.
- Talk to your local independent garden center. Their knowledgeable retail staff might know what that bug is, or can easily direct you to someone who can help.
- Use an bug identification app on your phone. There are many free and low cost apps, including several from the USDA. New AI-based programs are also available for identifying species.
- Read a book. Our favorites are Insect Pests by George Fichter and Garden Insects of North America by Whitney Cranshaw and Doug Shetlar.
